Dan

Billy was a waiter and he waited on the man
The man named Dan he had a plan
But first he ordered flan
The flan was good but not the best
The sun set in the West
The shadows rose like flapping crows
Billy smoothed his vest

Dan asked Billy candidly if waiting was his dream
“Not my dream” he said to Dan whose flan plate was now clean
“I want to be a big screen star and make the music scene”
“Just promise me” said Dan the man, “one easy, simple thing
Just say the words and kiss my ring and you will have these things”

“Of course,” said Billy un-amused, for Dan was serious
And kissed the ring and said the words
Dan paid his bill and left
Now Billy’s big in movies and does concerts on the side
And though he runs from here to there
There’s nowhere he can hide

Dan, you’re the man with the plan
Man, you be doing just fine
Wham, where you been all my life
Damn, you sure took your time

Sara was a junkie and she thought she’d shot the moon
The alley stank but blocked the wind and she was all alone
The lamp light dimmed, her heart beat raced, the alley seemed a tomb
Then she heard the pitter pat of Dan’s black shiny shoes

“Just say the words and kiss my ring,” echoed in the dark
And Dan stepped lightly through the trash, he circled like a shark
Sara cried and kissed the ring, a pure and simple act
Now’s she’s clean and lives upstate, two children and a dog
And though her life is merry and her days are filled with light
She sometimes hears a crowing and her dreams are filled with fright

Dan, you’re the man with the plan
Man, you be doing just fine
Wham, where you been all my life
Damn, you sure took your time

The Dow was down, the Nasdaq too, and Peter was distressed
How could he pay his mortgage and make payments on the rest
Then from the TV came the words that eased his mental pain
“Just say the words and kiss my ring,” this ad approved by Dan
Now Peter rides his yacht most days, he’s careless with his wealth
But hits the gym each morning as he worries for his health

Dan, you’re the man with the plan
Man, you be doing just fine
Wham, where you been all my life
Damn, you sure took your time
